In an age where many people are using editing apps before their photos hit Instagram, the search for perfection continues to grow.

But for many of the most prolific photographers in the modeling industry, their careers have never been about perfection. Instead, the aim has always been to show their subject's flaws in the best possible light.

Here are some of the modeling industry's best photographers:

1. Mario Testino


Testino's career has spanned more than three decades. During that time, he's worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss.

His work has been featured in advertising campaigns around the world. These include Versace, Dolce & Gabbana Gucci, and Burberry.

2. Irving Penn


Irving Penn (1917-2009) is another hugely prolific photographer. His work spans seven decades, and his photos are known for their elegance.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be exhibiting a comprehensive retrospective of Irving Penn's work in April. A book will also be released which is an interesting account of some of his inner conflict due to his minimalist style and the extravagant trends often seen in the fashion industry.

3. Helmet Newton 


Newton has received many awards over the years. In 1999 her was given the "Life Legend Award for Lifetime Achievement in Magazine Photography" by Life Magazine.

His long career has revolutionized the industry, and he even has a museum dedicated to his work in Berlin.

4. Steven Meisel


 Meisel remains one of the modeling industry's most iconic photographers. Models around the world aspire to work with him, and he's been the photographer for every Vogue Italia cover since 1988. 

5. Annie Leibovitz


No list of photography legends would be complete without Annie Leibovitz. She remains one of the most famous portrait photographers in the United States. In 1970 

In 1970 she began working for Rolling Stone and was the chief photographer by 1973. She began working for Vogue in 1998 and has created some of the most influential magazine covers and advertising campaigns in history.

6. Albert Watson


Albert Watson is famous for his striking images, which have appeared on more than 100 Vogue covers globally. His work has been featured in many other publications, Vibe to Time to Rolling Stone.

Born in Scotland, Watson moved to the US in 1970 and began his career as a hobby while working as a school teacher in LA.

Since then, he's worked on successful advertising campaigns for some of the biggest corporations in the world, including Chanel, Revlon, Levis, the Gap, and Prada.

7. Terry Richardson


Richardson has been called "The Last Great Fashion Photographer" in a book by Michael Gross.

His career spans three decades and it has been controversial. For many, however, there's little doubt that he's still the foremost photographer in the fashion and modeling industry today.
